And the racial gap among scores is even more alarming.

The ACT scores for the Class of 2009 were released this Wednesday. The report shows that only 23% of students received “college-ready” scores in all four subjects on the test (English, Math, Reading, Science), a mere 1% increase over the previous year.

The racial gap in scores is obvious. The proportion of white students who received “college-ready” scores in all four subjects is 7 times that of black students. Similar statistics occur with white students vis a vis Native American and Hispanic students.

A lot of factors contribute to the racial gap: densely populated urban areas, socioeconomic status, quality of public schools, ripple effects of past racial discrimination, the list goes on. What will help close this gap? Technology and the Internet? Educational reform, and if so, of what kind? Let us know what you think.
