Are we going to extreme lengths to take the bumps out of life for our children?

Many colleges these days are strongly encouraging parents to attend orientation sessions at the university their children will be attending. With lectures from deans, advisers, professors, and students they learn about academic advising, college transition, meal plans, career guidance, campus safety, student life, and more. Some parents say it raised their comfort level but also their anxiety level. Bringing to light issues of developmental challenges – competence, identity and intimacy – versus attending classes.

 

Are we going too far?
