College Costs

Be prepared: College isn’t cheap.

The total cost of college includes tuition and fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation, and other expenses. These costs may seem very high, but remember that financial aid is available to help you and your family. Most people require some form of financial assistance, whether through need-based grants, loans, scholarships or work-study programs.

Below is the average undergraduate budgets compiled from colleges and universities across the country. For more than a decade, average costs have continued to increase at a rate of 4% - 8%. That’s close to the rate of inflation. While tuition and fees differ significantly from region to region (Southwest is lower than the national average and New England is consistently higher than the national average), this summary offers a good picture of what you can expect to pay.
